Bernhard Niesner Joins Tomorrow University’s Board

The Busuu co-founder built one of the world's largest learning communities by connecting people across languages and cultures. Now he's helping us do the same for purpose-driven careers.

We're delighted to welcome Bernhard Niesner as an investor and member of the board of Tomorrow University of Applied Sciences

Bernhard knows what it takes to build learning that reaches across borders. In 2008 he co-founded Busuu, the language learning platform named after a nearly lost language once spoken by only a handful of people in Cameroon. Over the next fourteen years he grew it into a community of more than 100 million learners across every continent, and in 2021 Busuu was acquired by Chegg. Along the way, EY named him Entrepreneur of the Year in its Disruptor category.

Busuu grew on a simple idea: every learner is also a teacher. People practicing a new language get feedback from native speakers, and give feedback in return. That's social learning at its core, and it's the same belief that shapes our programs. Skills stick, and purpose takes shape, when you learn alongside and from a community of peers rather than alone.

Connection across cultures builds a better tomorrow

A language is a bridge to another way of seeing the world. Bernhard spent his career lowering the barriers between people who don't yet share a common tongue. We're working toward a similar future through education: a global community of changemakers who learn from each other's contexts, challenges, and callings, and carry what they learn back into their own corner of the world, to build a brighter, human tomorrow.

Bernhard has taken an idea from a small office in Madrid to a global platform and a landmark exit, without losing sight of why he started. That combination of ambition and purpose is exactly what a growing university needs as we widen our reach and stay true to what makes us us.

"Bernhard has spent his career proving that learning is most powerful when it connects people. That idea is also at the heart of what we're building at Tomorrow University. Having someone on our board who scaled a global learning community to a hundred million people, and stayed true to why he started, is a gift. I can't wait to learn from him." – Christian Rebernik, Co-Founder and Co-CEO, Tomorrow University

We're building a university where finding your calling and building your career are the same journey. Welcoming Bernhard is a meaningful step, and there's a lot of tomorrow still to build.

I've always believed education should open doors, not just hand out credentials. Tomorrow University helps people find their purpose and turn it into real impact, and it does it in community, the way people actually learn best. That mission is one I want to help grow. I'm honored to join the board. – Bernhard Niesner
