How Many Years of Professional Experience Does an Executive MBA Require?

Applicants need a minimum of 10 years of professional experience, including at least five years in a leadership role. Our own eligibility criteria set that floor and hold every applicant to it.

Your leadership experience matters as much as the raw years. INSEAD's Global Executive MBA admissions page, current as of 2026, reports that a typical class averages 14 years of experience.

INSEAD applicants also have at least three years managing teams or projects. The more real management scope you bring, the stronger your application looks past our own 10-year floor.

Do You Need a Bachelor's Degree for an Executive MBA?

Yes, in most cases. The formal criterion is a minimum of 180 ECTS, the European Credit Transfer System points that track completed coursework. A standard bachelor's degree carries exactly that many. Without one, you are not automatically excluded.

Applicants without an undergraduate degree can still qualify through a different route. It runs through a recognized German vocational diploma that took two or three years to complete. That diploma has to pair with several years of relevant professional experience.

A one-year training certificate or a short course does not meet this bar. This path also requires passing our IMBA Entrance Exam. Passing it shows you can handle graduate-level academic work without a university degree behind you.

What Language and Document Requirements Apply?

Admission requires a minimum B2 level of English. That level is set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. At B2, you can follow complex discussion and write clearly on familiar topics. Every applicant needs to demonstrate this before enrolling, since every course runs in English.

Beyond proof of your degree or vocational diploma, the application asks for evidence of your English level. It also asks for a written statement of your motivation. Admissions reads that statement alongside your professional background, and the interview builds on both.

What Replaces the GMAT in Executive MBA Admissions?

An interview and a written motivation assessment replace the test score entirely. Every applicant to our Global Impact Executive MBA completes a mandatory admission interview. No GMAT or GRE score appears anywhere in the process.

No, because there is no GMAT requirement to waive in the first place. A waiver excuses one applicant from a test the program still requires everyone else to take. Our admissions process never asks for a GMAT or GRE score, so there is nothing to request an exception from.
